Answer D. The epidermis is generally composed of four cell types: melanocytes, keratinocytes, Merkel’s cells, and Langerhans’ cells. The outer skin surface is composed of 4 layers with the exception of the palms and soles where there is an additional Stratum Lucidum layer. 2. Which of the following lesions types is an elevated lesion (above the plane of the skin)?

Answer A. Elevated skin lesion types are: abscess, burrow, cyst, crust, lichenificaiton, nodule, papule, plaque, pustule, scale, vesicle, wheal. From Dockery, Cutaneous Disorders of the Lower Extremity, 1997, Chapter 2, page 14.

 
3. Mosaic warts are generally associated with Human Papilloma Virus type:

a. 2

b. 5 and 10

c. 2 and 4

d. 5

Answer A. While mosaic warts are usually associated with HPV 2, verruca vulgaris is usually HPV 2 and 4, and verruca plana are usually HPV 3 and 10. From Dockery, Cutaneous Disorders of the Lower Extremity, 1997, Chapter 7, page 70-73.

 

4. Which of the following best matches this definition? “discoloration of the skin resulting when blood extravasates into the intracutaneous or subcutaneous areas.”

a. Erythema

Answer C. Unlike telangiectasia and erythema, purpura is variable in color and does not blanch on external pressure. From Dockery, Cutaneous Disorders of the Lower Extremity, 1997, Chapter 9, page 118.

 

5. Which of the following topical corticosteroids is the most potent?

a. Prednisolone 0.5%

b. Triamcinolone acetonide cream 0.5%

c. Betamethasone dipropionate cream 0.05%

d. Desoximethasone cream 0.25%

Answer D.  The potency of topical corticosteroids is generally placed onto a scale ranging from I (high potency) to VI (least potent). Answer D is from the high potency group. From Dockery, Cutaneous Disorders of the Lower Extremity, 1997, Chapter 10, page 144.
