Welcome to ‘Week 3’ of the curriculum. I think
the dynamics of this week’s lecture assignments
really confirms the nature of this great
profession…while the 1st years are reviewing
their H&P skills, the 3rd years are getting the
latest techniques and refinements in the
surgical approach to Ankle Fusion. This really
covers the spectrum of post graduate education
and we are glad you have chosen to participate
with PRESENT. Scroll down and click on your
lecture…

Traditionally
seen as being at the heart of all diagnostic evaluations,
the History and Physical is both an art and science. This
lecture will review the basic format for obtaining a
complete history, followed by key elements of a thorough
physical exam. This will be done with an emphasis on
effective evaluation of the “at risk” medical patient,
through the eyes of a Family Physician. For some, it will be
a review of skills already acquired while others will learn
new techniques. Hopefully everyone will gain a better
appreciation and enhanced confidence of the pre-operative
medical clearance.
Dr. Bakotic
speaks about the most common malignant tumors affecting the
small bones of the feet. Using his published experiences at
Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center as a template for the
discussion, he notes important trends with regard to
frequency of occurrence, treatment, and prognosis when these
tumors arise in the feet. Pertinent epidemiologic data,
radiographic features, and histopathologic and genetic
findings are additionally reviewed. In some cases, gross
images are used to provide an anatomic correlation for
pertinent radiographic findings. Taking a new approach, Dr.
Bakotic points out the contrasting clinicopathologic data
that relates to malignant tumors of the bones of the feet as
opposed to similar tumors arising elsewhere in the skeletal
system.

The complex ankle arthrodesis procedure is outlined in this
lecture by Dr. Schuberth. Dr. Schuberth conveys the
necessity of apposition of bone and stable fixation in order
to have a successful outcome for the patient. Indications,
ankle biomechanics, and surgical approaches are discussed,
and Dr. Schuberth provides multiple case studies for
evaluation.
