The
assigned lecture this week is ‘Practice Options for New Practitioners’
by John Guiliana, DPM, MS. As a Board Certified Podiatrist who also
holds a Masters in Healthcare Management, Dr. Guiliana is in a unique
position to provide some very insightful practice management advice.
This 43 minute lecture is packed with real-world info that can better
prepare you for the future.
Having helped numerous residents through the process myself, the
transition from residency into a practice environment is certainly a
challenge. There is no shortage of unsolicited advice from your peers on
what you should and should not do, but who and what do you believe? How
do you know that something which might work so well for another will
work at all for you? How do you even decide between associateship,
partnership, opening up on your own, working within a large health
system, or perhaps even academia?
Obviously there are no easy answers here, but the recommended lecture
this week will be a great starting place for ideas. My other key point
of advice is that your first job doesn’t have to be absolutely perfect.
By this, I mean that many graduating residents don’t want to accept a
possible practice opportunity unless the stars seem to line up and
everything about the job is absolutely perfect. This just doesn’t happen
often, and you probably should consider getting yourself a good job in
the location you want to be and then work on finding the ‘perfect’ job
once you get a year or two into practice.
Dr. Guilianas program provides students, residents, and new practitioners with insightful information necessary to make a transition into the "business world" of medicine. The important elements of associateships and a practice buy-in/buy-out are explored. With diligent consideration and practice of the strategies outlined in this program, the learning curve of a new practitioner will be greatly reduced.
