Lecture Assignment for Week 4
starting Monday, July 23, 2007
2007-2008 Residency Year

This Week #4:

This Week we feature an H&P Lecture for the 1st year Residents, a continuation of the Tumor Series for the 2nd year Residents, and MRSA Infection Update for the 3rd year Residents. Each of these lectures feature helpful clinical information that will confirm and supplement your current knowledge in these topics.

The H&P lecture is presented by a Family Practice Physician, the Tumor lecture by a DPM/DO pathologist, and the MRSA lecture is presented by a DPM wound expert. I believe you will find each of these lecture presentations to be helpful in your daily practice and residency education. Send your thoughts to me at jsteinberg@podiatry.com.

Have a great week.

1st Year Lecture

Podiatric History and Physical Exam

Gregg Sherman, MD
Northwest Medical Center
Margate, Florida

Traditionally seen as being at the heart of all diagnostic evaluations, the History and Physical is both an art and science. This lecture will review the basic format for obtaining a complete history, followed by key elements of a thorough physical exam. This will be done with an emphasis on effective evaluation of the "at risk" medical patient, through the eyes of a Family Physician. For some, it will be a review of skills already acquired while others will learn new techniques. Hopefully everyone will gain a better appreciation and enhanced confidence of the pre-operative medical clearance.

Dr. Bakotic speaks about the most common malignant tumors affecting the small bones of the feet. Using his published experiences at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center as a template for the discussion, he notes important trends with regard to frequency of occurrence, treatment, and prognosis when these tumors arise in the feet. Pertinent epidemiologic data, radiographic features, and histopathologic and genetic findings are additionally reviewed. In some cases, gross images are used to provide an anatomic correlation for pertinent radiographic findings. Taking a new approach, Dr. Bakotic points out the contrasting clinicopathologic data that relates to malignant tumors of the bones of the feet as opposed to similar tumors arising elsewhere in the skeletal system.
