The Future for
Podiatry...Is Now
As promised, tonight
I wanted to elaborate on the New Cardiovascular Horizons Meeting
which took place last Thurs – Sat in New Orleans. This CME meeting
is now in its 7th year and has featured Podiatry as a part of that
history right from the beginning. I have been fortunate to
participate in this meeting since 2002 as a speaker and recently as
a co-director for the program. With annual attendance between 2,000
and 3,500, the meeting is a true multidisciplinary function with
topics that reach out to a diverse audience of cardiologists,
endovascular surgeons, wound care specialists, nursing and more.

One key thing that this meeting represents is the
expanded role that we as podiatrists play in the big picture of
health care today. There is huge interest among specialties such as
cardiology, interventional radiology, and vascular surgery in limb
salvage procedures – particularly those that require a lower
extremity endovascular procedure. Podiatric physicians often act to
triage high risk diabetic foot problems and therefore we are
important gate-keepers for this type of referral.

New Cardiovascular Horizons does a great job of
truly bringing the team under one roof for a conference. This type
of team approach meeting is something that we will see more and more
of...and I think this is truly a great thing. Getting each specialty
out of its secluded individual meetings and into a larger forum for
information exchange will help us all practice better medicine. I
can’t count the number of times that I heard, "I didn’t realize
podiatrists did that type of work" at this meeting!
