Residency Insight

RI Clinical Case of the Month

The patient is a 52-year-old female who has a history of 3 weeks status post bunion correction, right 1st metatarsal, with phalangeal osteotomy, 1st ray; hammertoe correction, 2nd digit; as well as metatarsal osteotomy, 2nd. The patient relates that her postoperative course was complicated by a fall and she has noticed increased swelling, redness, and now some drainage to the area of her 2nd MTPJ. She presented to our emergency room with concerns for infection. She relates that a K-wire was previously removed from her foot for some concerns of infection and antibiotics have not improved her condition. Review the X-rays below and write in with your surgical treatment plan…I will print your comments and show the final result next week.

Please write in with your surgical treatment plan, your thoughts and comments for publication next week in this column. To do so, CLICK HERE.
