How
We Use PRESENT
Courseware at Northwest
Medical Center
Here is how
PRESENT
is utilized at Northwest Medical
Center...
Each week, the residents
and I, jointly select an appropriate topic. The
topic usually corresponds to an
anticipated surgery or interesting clinic case
that we've seen recently.
VIEWING THE LECTURE
The residents and I view
the lecture either separately or together. Rather
than using our time together
reviewing the fundamentals (anatomy,
classifications) in the lecture, we use it
to review the more salient, clinically important
parts of the lecture. This
gives the residents the opportunity to discuss the
practical components of the
lecture and get answers to any questions they may
have.

ENHANCING THE LECTURE
CONTENT
I use this face to face
time as Residency Director to enhance what was
discussed in the lecture, based
upon my experience in podiatric medicine and
surgery...what I have seen
throughout my career. Our residents also attend
traditional lectures given at
the hospital, at other residency programs and at
seminars.

HOSTING
JOURNAL CLUB - USING REFERENCES
Recommendations for
Journal Clubs are included in the Courseware
reference list at the end of each
lecture. Our residents alternate selecting and
presenting a Journal
article from the lecture at our weekly meeting.
This gives us an
additional opportunity to discuss the lecture
topic in more depth, with the
article often being the springboard to a lively
discussion.

PRESENT COURSEWARE INTEGRATED
INTO PROGRAM CURRICULUM
Employing this
method of integrating PRESENT Courseware
into our program's curriculum has enriched the
educational experience that my
residents receive, and has given me a teaching
method that is making me feel
much more effective in my role as an educator.

LET'S
DISCUSS...
I'd
really like to get a few good
online discussions going here in these
Residency Insight emailings that we
send out midweek. What are your feelings
about the education that you
are getting as a podiatric resident ? How are
you handling it ?
How is it affecting your family life ? Do you
have any advice that may
help your colleagues in programs around the
country cope better with the
pressures ? Let's share a bit with each other
and interact in an
online community by clicking on the email
LINK above and sharing what's on your
mind. We'll all benefit by
it !
