Office
Dispensing
For over ten years, my practice has made
certain products available to our patients. Through trial and error, we learned
which products are well received and which are not. Over the next few months, I
will describe certain items which I have personally had great success with.
By the checkout desk in the front of my office, I have a pegboard which holds
examples of various products which can be purchased in my office. The placement
of these products is strategic. Over the years, I’ve learned a thing or two
about impulse buying and proper positioning by observing how things are done at
“Toys R Us.” I always left Toys R Us with an extra $4.99 purchase because
Pokemon Cards or Power Ranger figures were displayed at a height which would
attract the attention of a child 3’ 6’’ tall.

Spenco Polysorb is an excellent product which patients greatly appreciate. Aside
from the therapeutic benefits, patients love the “delicious” feeling of having
them in their shoes. I use it as a cost effective first line adjunctive
treatment for conditions such as:
-
Plantar fasciitis
-
Soft tissue atrophy of plantar fat pad
(Rheumatoid arthritis)
-
Off Loading
-
Insertional tendonitis of the achilles
tendon
-
Chronic Metatarsalgia
-
Accommodative type arch support for
flatfoot (the rubber arch fill makes it more supportive than other flexible OTC
arch supports)

For patients with intractable porokeratotic lesions, Spenco Polysorb is
extremely beneficial. I use it in the following manner: I mark the excrescence
with a marker. The insole is placed against the foot and the location of the
lesion is transferred onto the support. A trephine is then used to create an
aperture for the lesion. Patients prefer this to felt padding which must adhere
to the bottom of their foot.

Spenco Polysorb is best used in walking or
running sneakers or in a shoe with greater depth. There are many other excellent
products made by Spenco, which you should consider dispensing through your
office.
