        Drill

             Countersink

                  Measure

                         Tap

                                 and

                                        Screw

This mnemonic has been used for years by residents in training to ensure that they follow all the necessary steps in good A.O. fixation techniques. The advent of cannulated lag screws that are self-drilling and self-tapping eliminated at least 3 of these steps.

The process is much easier, it’s more precise, and it saves valuable operating room time. It is rapidly becoming the technique of choice for the foot and ankle surgeon when performing metaphyseal osteotomies of the 1st ray.

Over the last year, 2.0 cannulated screws became available. They are the ideal method of fixating 5th metatarsal osteotomies.  For more information, click here to view the lecture on Tailors Bunions.
