A GLOSSARY OF RESIDENCY
TERMINOLOGY
By
Jay
Lieberman, DPM
In my last
installment, I discussed CASPR and the CRIP. We only touched on
CPME, COTH and AACPM. It is probably a good idea for us to
develop a glossary of terms to enhance our understanding of
Residency education.
CPME
Council on Podiatric Medical Education
This
is
the accrediting agency for podiatric medical education. The
council oversees the accreditation of the colleges of podiatric
medicine, the approval of residency programs, sponsors of
continuing medical education, and specialty certifying boards.
On January
22, 2003, the Council on Podiatric Medical Education (CPME)
formally adopted publications 320, Standards and Requirements
for Approval of Residencies in Podiatric Medicine and Surgery,
and 330, Procedures for Approval of Residencies in Podiatric
Medicine and Surgery. These documents have been updated to
reflect the implementation of new guides and standards for
residencies.
Contained
within the document are two new categories of residency
programs, which will replace the current categories.
Podiatric Medicine and Surgery 24 (PM&S-24
and
Podiatric
Medicine and Surgery 36 (PM&S-36).
The
Podiatric Orthopedic Residency (POR),
the
Primary Podiatric Medical Residency (PPMR),
the
Rotating Podiatric Residency (RPR)
and the
Podiatric Surgical Residency 12 and 24 (PSR 12 &
24)
will all be phased out in the years to come.

information can be found at

JRRC
Joint Residency Review Committee
Podiatric
Residency approval is based on programmatic evaluation and
periodic review by this entity.
The JRRC is
responsible for determining eligibility of applicant
institutions for initial on-site evaluation, authorizing
increases in residency positions, authorizing resident
transfers, and recommending to the Council approval of residency
programs.
AACPM
The American Association of Colleges of Podiatric Medicine
The AACPM’s
mission is to enhance both academic podiatric medicine and the
education of future podiatric physicians. Additional information
can be found at
http://www.aacpm.org/
COTH
Council of Teaching Hospitals
COTH is a
membership organization comprised of institutions sponsoring
Council-approved podiatric residency programs (including
programs holding provisional and probationary approval). The
COTH advocates for the interest of residency programs and is an
information source for the same. The goals of COTH include
fostering excellence in residency training, promoting a code of
ethics, developing policy, and serving as a forum for the
exchange of ideas on residency education. COTH oversees the
CASPR and CRIP residency interview process, setting interview
dates, match dates, CME education and ethics and rules for the
process. COTH is a component of the American Association of
Colleges of Podiatric Medicine (AACPM). The Council on Podiatric
Medical Education and the JRRC encourage sponsoring institutions
to participate in COTH.
COTH works
in cooperation with CPME to assist Residency Directors in a
smooth transition of your podiatric residency program into the
newly approved residency models and changes as noted in the new
CPME documents mentioned above.
