Residency
Insight
There is Still Plenty
Left for Us to Learn
and
There Always Will Be
“It's what you learn after you know it all that counts.”
-John Wooden
Whether you
care for the sport of basketball or not, you have to admit that this quote
by famed UCLA coach John Wooden is on the mark. I think it serves to keep
all of us in touch with reality and our feet firmly planted on the ground.
Especially in the niche of podiatric residency training, it is easy to slip
into the mindset that you are at the top of your game or that there is
really nothing more for you to learn on a particular topic. As a resident
you may have performed thousands of procedures and be the chief of a
prestigious program, or as an attending, you may be the program director and
the one who is sought after for the complicated cases…but the quote still
applies no matter where you are in the game. The body of knowledge
that we, as podiatrists, must master is a slowly moving target. If you
don't constantly absorb the new literature as it gets published, and learn
the new techniques as they are developed, you will slowly fall behind.
With this
in mind, I would like to make an open invitation for residents of all
programs to submit interesting cases to PRESENT that could be
shared
with the residency education community by way of this weekly column. This
unique electronic medium allows for us to formulate an interactive case
discussion and can serve as a sounding-board for diagnostic / treatment
dilemmas. The cases should be in brief S.O.A.P. format and include photos
and relevant patient history in addition to the final outcome of the case.
Please send me a note via the address below and I will be happy to send you
a case submission form.
The
interactive case discussions are just one of many additional ways that we
plan to build on the already valuable contribution that PRESENT can make to
you and your program.
Please send any suggestions, thoughts, questions or case presentations to me at:

I look forward to a great year!
