Residency
Insight
As
You Head Out the Door…
Most residency programs
around the country are having graduation celebrations this week and next. For
those of you who are being honored as graduates…Congratulations!
This
transition from resident to practitioner marks one of the final professional
landmarks and certainly is something you have worked toward for a number of
years. Many people have stood by your side or behind you to make this day
possible – and this is of course a great time to thank them.
For those of you moving on to
the next year of training, you should take this time to reflect on the goals you
have for the coming year. There truly is no opportunity like your residency
years…when else in your career are you going to actually be paid to learn?
However, in order for you to maximally benefit from this experience, you must
actively choose to make the most of everyday and every case. If you are just
along for the ride then you will likely be left behind when things really get
going…
To the graduates…I cannot
imagine a better time to be graduating into this profession.
Politically,
professionally, and academically, Podiatry is in the best position it has ever
been in. We have made significant strides to align ourselves with our MD and DO
colleagues in many arenas, yet we have retained a distinct specialty that is met
with increasing respect. Podiatric Medicine and Surgery now has a strong
presence in many arenas which were once thought to be impossible…academic or
research based practices at major medical teaching centers, presence in
prominent orthopaedic practices, leadership roles in large multi-specialty and
managed care groups, publications in many prominent international medical
journals, and research presentations accepted at the most elite of scientific
societies. We also lead medicine in Distance Learning, which you’ve all been
using in the form of PRESENT lectures, and online publications like Residency
Insight. While we
certainly have more ground to cover in order to challenge some persisting
negative politics and ignorance, I believe the momentum we have established
already is unstoppable.
