Distance Learning

As a result of the
development of PRESENT
Courseware, podiatry now leads medicine in the field of Distance Learning.
You are all Distance Learning pioneers, in so far as you have been active early
users of online lectures, and active readers of online publications like
Residency Insight. There is an additional way
that you, our members, in a tried and true way, can use PRESENT Courseware to
enrich your development as a podiatrist, academically and professionally. That
is, to use perhaps the most powerful Distance Learning feature of all, and that
is Online Discussion. Never have the ideas of a group of likeminded individuals
advanced faster than since email and the web became commonly used in 1995.
Online blogs affected the last election, but there are also web bulletin boards,
Instant Messaging and email newsletter blasts, like PMNews that are used in
every affinity group, to allow the members to talk. The
networking that goes on
between you and your friends at live lectures and meetings can go on every day (
when you choose to dive in) using online discussion.

Distance Learning is
exploding all over the world today. Most higher learning
centers are at least dabbling in web based courses and some are greatly
exploiting it's possibilities and expanding
their reach. The largest distance learning school is the University of
Phoenix, and their enrollment has recently surpassed that of any single
university in the world. In other words, an online-only school is now the
biggest school in the world.
PRESENT
Courseware has enabled us to venture into this new
territory and to create a better level of communication in our community. I
encourage you to take the best possible advantage of this technology and make
more out of
PRESENT
than just an online lecture system.
When done right, distance learning courses combine live lectures, with a
web
bulletin board or blog,
broadcast emails like Residency Insight,
Instant
Messaging or Live Chat. All are now simple ways to have a discussion with a
group of people across the planet. Distance learning is very convenient
and effective, and works well for people who are busy pursuing careers and just
want to better themselves.

We at
PRESENT
Courseware have the
vision that ALL those training in podiatric medicine and surgery should be viewing
lectures by the most renowned teachers in podiatry, and we made it so. We
also believe that to
advance the world of ideas that make podiatry great, we should be
talking to
each other in between meetings, online.
Can we talk ?

When
you have a topic, issue, or complex case that you would like to let the
podiatric community know about or comment on, the simplest way to get a discussion started is to write your thoughts down in the
form of a letter, and email it to Editor John Steinberg, DPM at
jsteinberg@podiatry.com
I promise you a quick reply and this… the entire US
podiatric residency community will soon be talking about the topic or issue that
you wrote in about, and will be smarter for it.
