What Made you
Choose Podiatry?
I have always been amused by the many ways in
which people have landed in the profession of Podiatry. It was really a pretty
easy decision for myself, having come from a “Podiatry Family” in which my
grandfather, father, brother, and several cousins chose podiatry as our
profession. However, for those who did not grow up being exposed to podiatry on
a daily basis, one has to wonder why in the world someone would think “I really
want to be a Podiatrist.”
Several of the more common scenarios of why
someone chose to enter into a career in podiatry include those who sought
podiatric care as a child or teen, those who were involved in athletics and
athletic training, and those who worked in a podiatrist’s office. There are
strong campaigns underway to educate the health career advisors at the
undergraduate schools so that they will be informed of where our profession fits
into the dynamic of medical and surgical practice. The education of these
college advisors is of key importance if we are to continue to increase the
number and quality of our applicant pool for the colleges of podiatric medicine
each year…
I am curious to hear from you on who or what
influenced you to become a Podiatrist. Please send me a quick note with your
story to jsteinberg@podiatry.com
I will compile these and publish them next
week so we can all get a better perspective and where this profession is coming
from and perhaps also where it is going. Thanks for your feedback.
