Your Most Valuable Gift
Christmas has
come and gone, and Hanukkah is in full swing. The winter holiday
season is of course a very busy time for most, and it is certainly
an opportunity to test your time management abilities. The balance
between work obligations, family time, and personal time can become
even more challenging as we rapidly approach the new year…
Chances are that most of you participated in some type
of gift giving this season. One gift that you might not have
realized you were giving is your TIME.
There are many occasions in which the devotion of time
and effort toward someone or something can be far more valuable than
any material gift you would otherwise think of. One such example
that I can readily offer is teaching and sharing in the clinical
training environment. For instance…the extra time you spent with the
rotating student extern to teach a suturing workshop, the coaching
you gave to your junior resident before a challenging case the next
day, the inservice you did for the hospital staff on how to apply a
new dressing material, or perhaps even the time you put into
creating an extern handbook.
Today in my clinic at Georgetown, I hosted a 1st year
podiatry student who was in the DC area to visit family for the
holiday. Not only did he get a new perspective on high risk diabetic
limb salvage and wound healing, he gained some insight as to the
importance of the classes that are soon to come his way. We usually
think of student externs as 4th years only, but I would challenge
you that opening up your residency to visiting students of any level
is a great opportunity for both parties. You will increase awareness
of the opportunities at your residency program and you will probably
help a student to discover new depths of what podiatry has to offer.
Have a great New Year!
