I am pleased to welcome the 2 guest authors who contributed this week's Residency Insight.  It is only fitting that their topic is Giving Back, as they have done much more than their fair share of giving back and continue to make their significant contribution to podiatry.

When asked to share experiences of giving back to the profession of Podiatric Medicine and Surgery, the initial response was “sure, that sounds great”. Inherently, it is the right thing to do - GIVE BACK.

Willingness to take on additional tasks allows one to realize that the perception of never having enough time to do what one wants is a constant. Understanding this perception creates the reality that one makes time for what he or she perceives to be important, regardless of the complexity or number of commitments. In pondering the task at hand, undoubtedly GIVING BACK is profoundly important for the success of our profession and in turn the success of each individual Practitioner. While prioritizing tasks and wondering if there is enough time to work a short testimonial into a schedule already jammed with clinic, surgery, professional development, pending papers, and most importantly family, one is reminded that giving back is not only necessary, but also incredibly rewarding.

While reflecting upon achievements and successes of prior externs and residents, contributing to their education will always be a positive memory and a lasting positive contribution to the advancement of the profession. Besides developing long lasting professional relationships, a common bond is often developed with fond memories of hard work and specific patient care. Those whom have been fortunate enough to be involved in the educational process know the feeling of pride and accomplishment one experiences when a pupil grasps a new concept, masters a surgical technique, completes residency training, or advances to the level of professional certification. The success of those affected by GIVING BACK via training is rewarding, invigorating, and provides comfort through knowing that one made a lasting contribution to something greater than an individual achievement.

Although everyone will not have the opportunity to train residents, there are numerous ways to GIVE BACK to advance our profession. A few which readily come to mind include: serving on state and national committees, serving as a mentor, volunteering your skills to local outreach programs, sponsoring or contributing to medically related awareness events, conducting research, and submitting articles for publication. Many of these opportunities will lead to national and international travel, which can provide opportunities to develop good professional relationships and to garner a better understanding of different cultures. Regardless of how one chooses to become involved, the key is to understand it is important, and make time to maximize your opportunity to contribute.

Make the promotion of the advancement of Podiatric Medicine and Surgery a priority. GIVING BACK is an investment in the future of our profession, which is personally rewarding, and contributes to an enhanced quality of life for your patients, professional peers, and family. This will also serve as a function to continue to challenge oneself, keep sharp, and assist in maintaining a high degree of skill level.
