When
you're cutting and moving bones in elective reconstructive surgery, or putting
broken bones together in trauma surgery, you'd better know how to keep them
together. In the construction trade its known as fastening...in surgery,
fixation.
Dr.
DeMore begins by reviewing the history of Internal Fixation and the advent of AO
principles. He discusses the physiology of bone healing, and how rigid fixation
with compression enhances the chance for strong primary bone healing. He
introduces the great variety of devices and technique available to the modern
bone surgeon: Wires, pins, screws, plates, soft tissue anchors. He
discusses the benefits versus the drawbacks of using absorbable vs permanent
hardware. Finally, he introduces External Fixation as an alternative and
discusses the pros and cons of this cutting edge technique. This
beautifully illustrated lecture by Dr. DeMore, one of podiatry's great teachers,
is a required stop on the road to becoming a well trained podiatric surgeon.
