The surgical management of Hallux Abducto Valgus
is an important part of most podiatric practices. It seems that there is a
strong geographical and philosophical bias as to the type of procedures most
often chosen to correct bunions. While metatarsal head procedures are clearly
the most often performed, the indications for base and diaphyseal procedures
should be considered prior to proceeding to the operating room.
Dr. Novack provides an overview of the indications, technique, and variations of
1st metatarsal diaphyseal procedures and their role in relieving hallux abducto
valgus. The Ludloff, Mau, Scarf, and Offset V osteotomies are discussed with
diagrammatic review of each. Fixation options are discussed along with post
operative course for each. A discussion of the potential complications such as
troughing and concerns for vascular supply is presented.
Tune-in to this lecture and get a great review of this category
of bunion procedures. You are guaranteed to pick up some new points about each
procedure and perhaps it will broaden your understanding of the indications for
the diaphyseal osteotomies.
