Absorbable materials are used commonly in podiatric surgery
today. Implants which are popular include suture, screws, pins, anchors,
and plates. There are significant differences between the absorbable material
types and there are specific indications and procedures which are helpful in
attaining good patient outcomes. Do patients with absorbable screws need
longer periods of non-weightbearing? When should you consider a patient a poor
candidate for absorbable devices? What is the process by which the materials
resorb?
Dr. Dolce provides a detailed overview of the concepts, indications, materials,
techniques, and patient selection concerns in the area of absorbable fixation.
The lecture provides the viewer with an understanding of the different polymers
used in this technology and concludes with several detailed clinical case
presentations. A very helpful question and answer session details many of the
common misconceptions regarding the use of this relatively new technology.
Clearly, absorbable fixation can play a significant role in the podiatric
operating room. This lecture will help the viewer understand the concepts of
this surgical instrumentation and its role in specific procedures. This lecture
should also assist the surgeon in making more informed decisions when planning
the best care for his / her patient…
