LECTURE

by Myron Bodman, DPM
Associate Professor, OCPM
Did you know that you can tell whether
someone is right or left handed by measuring the area of the nail lunula? This
is just one of many interesting facts and insights that you will discover when
reviewing the online presentation of “Nail Pathologies” by Myron Bodman, DPM.
Making the assumption that any change to the nail
plate is onychomycosis is a common mistake made in many podiatric offices on a
daily basis. This lecture helps to disprove many misconceptions about nails and
nail pathologies. The introduction includes a review of the anatomy and vascular
supply of the nail unit. Photographic and clinical examples help to emphasize
the key points of the nail pathologies reviewed such as ingrown toe nails,
paronychia, subungual hematoma, onychorrhexis, koilonychia, yellow nail
syndrome, and many more.

The nail can be an important
window to many systemic illnesses and symptoms such as drug reactions,
psoriasis, malignancy, lichen planus, trauma, tuberous sclerosis, pachonychia
congenita, etc. Having a strong knowledge base of nail pathologies beyond
onychomycosis is important to almost any practice and will certainly be
something that you get asked by your patients on a frequent basis…even in that
patient you are scheduling for a triple arthrodesis!
