In working with high risk patients for over 20 years, Dr. Pupp relates that
“Diabetic Limb Salvage is a most challenging part of the practice of medicine.”
He points out the importance of the multidisciplinary approach and the improved
patient outcomes that centers realize when they put the team approach into
practice. However, the number of lower extremity amputations in patients with
diabetes has increased drastically in the US…how do you better prepare yourself
to help these challenging patients? How can you use your medical and surgical
skills to actually make a difference for these patients?
Dr. Pupp emphasizes four factors in the prevention of amputation
in the patient with diabetes: 1. Patient education,
2. Tight glucose control, 3.
Vascular assessment, and 4. Pedorthotist intervention. Do’s and Don’ts are well
discussed and there is an abundance of truly practical information to gain from
this lecture. The information given will help better arm yourself to make a
difference for the ‘at risk’ patient when you enter the treatment room next
time…
