Partly due to the phenomenon of the ‘weekend athlete,’ Achilles
Tendon injuries are increasing in frequency. The surgical repair of these
injuries also appears to be on the rise with the advent of refined techniques
and improved outcomes in both acute and chronic injury interventions. This
lecture provides the viewer with a detailed perspective on the technique and
utility of the Flexor Hallucis Longus tendon augmentation in the repair of
Achilles Tendon injuries. Dr. DiDomenico delivers a very practical message with
a strong emphasis on clinical case discussions.
The lecture begins with an excellent review of the anatomy and
physiology of the Achilles Tendon. Particular attention is paid to the role of
vascularity and its relation to the incidence and type of injuries which often
occur. The lecture then continues with an overview of proper diagnostic
techniques in identifying a rupture or partial rupture of the Achilles. The
procedure of Flexor Hallucis Longus harvest and transfer is described in detail
and several relevant case presentations are discussed.
Dr. DiDomenico reviews this technique in a way that the viewer
can truly learn from. The clinically oriented lecture will lead the viewer into
a greater understanding of the options available when faced with a difficult
Achilles repair. The thoughts and techniques gained in this lecture may just be
what saves you when in the OR struggling with a large space defect or
problematic tendon repair.
