Podiatric surgical residents occasionally need to revisit the pathophysiology of
bone healing. A thorough understanding of these concepts will result in more
predictable outcomes. Dr. Jay Lieberman takes us back to the cellular level and
explores the entire continuum of the bone healing process. The role of the
periosteum in bone healing is investigated and the importance of maintaining its
integrity is explored. Environments that are most conducive to rapid bone
healing are discussed along with strategies that help to more closely
approximate primary bone healing.
Why do non unions occur? What factors result in aseptic necrosis? What is more
fundamental to achieving the best outcome in both trauma and elective bone
surgery ? These and other questions are answered in Dr. Lieberman’s Bone
Healing Lecture.
