Since it is something that
most of us do not deal with on a regular basis, we often struggle with the topic
of ‘Bone Tumors’. In fact, this topic is generally one of the most dreaded
sections of standardized examinations and board certification tests.
Dr. Bakotic speaks
about Bone Tumor Identification using the ‘Memorial Sloan-Kettering
Cancer Center Experience’ as a guide. Basic terms such as tumor, neoplasm, and
malignancy are discussed and defined. The increasing role of genetic knowledge
in tumor identification and classification is presented in detail. Several
groupings of benign tumors in the foot are presented to facilitate a general
understanding of the topic before going into more detail. As the most common
benign neoplasms of the foot, Aneurysmal Bone Cyst, Chondroblastoma, Subugual
Exostosis, and Giant Cell Tumor of Bone are the major focus of the
presentation. For each of these 4 tumors, Dr. Bakotic discusses a historical
background, etiology, epidemiology, classification, clinical presentation,
histology, treatment, and prognosis.
Often we find ourselves
memorizing certain trivial points about bone tumors for the purpose of
regurgitation on a standardized test. A thorough review of this well structured
lecture will provide you with a true clinical understanding of bone tumors so
that you can make clinical sense of the information. This approach to bone
tumors will give you a foundation on which to build and not leave you scrambling
to memorize and re-memorize trivia.
