Many of you probably rounded on MRSA (methicillin
resistant staph aureus) infected patients today in the hospital who are
undergoing medical and surgical treatment for their infection. This previously
rare antibiotic resistant infection was noted to become a growing nosocomial and
community infection in the mid 1980's. MRSA now comprises up to 75% of staph
infections in many regional hospitals and this has caused significant alarm in
the infectious disease community since drug therapies remain limited.
Dr. Snyder presents a thorough discussion of
the emerging medical concern of MRSA and new trends on the best practice for
treatment of these infections in the lower extremity. He points out many reasons
why hospitals and healthcare personnel have been responsible for the increased
prevalence of MRSA infections and some pointers as to how you can help avoid
this.
Several case discussions help to give a real
world understanding of MRSA and its affect on our patients. The emerging po
treatment option of linezolid is presented as an alternative to long term IV
Vancomycin. Costs, delivery, efficacy, and patient compliance are examined in
relation to successful MRSA treatment.
