LECTURE

Evidence Based Medicine has become a dominant
term in research and clinical practice over the past decade. It is likely that
you have at least heard of Evidence Based Medicine (EBM), and as a resident you
are probably being told to utilize EBM principles in your decision making and
when critiquing a journal article. However, do you really know the definition
of EBM and how it relates to biostatistics, epidemiology, and the levels of
evidence in a given study? What do sensitivity, specificity, and +/- predictive
values really mean to you and your patient?
To oversimplify things, you could say that
Evidence Based Medicine asks the question “is there valid and substantial
evidence to confirm the treatment course you have chosen for your patient?”
This lecture will help you better evaluate the correct answer to that question.
You will learn how to differentiate a piece of literature (such as a journal
article) you should entrust versus a piece that is perhaps not sufficient in
scientific value to change the way you practice. You will learn the levels of
evidence which should be used to evaluate studies and you may just never look at
a journal article the same way again…
