Stephen Spinner, DPM
Director of Podiatric
Residency Training,
Plantation General Hospital
36-month Podiatric Surgical Residency
As a student and early resident, I can well recall the
esteem and almost mysticism that comes with the ‘Triple Arthrodesis’ procedure.
It seemed as though this procedure was used as a ‘right of passage’ for
residents, and even served the role of a gauge as to the quality of one’s
program volume. This type of prestige and attention may give the procedure
itself a bit too much glory and may lead to apprehension in the case of the
surgeon. To help counter these concerns, you need to equip yourself with a
strong knowledge base and sense of clinical experience when approaching a
reconstructive procedure such as the triple arthrodesis.
From Ryerson and Lambrinudi to the leading surgeons of
today, the Triple Arthrodesis procedure has been well defined and the technique
has been thoroughly refined into the surgical technique currently used in the
OR. Dr. Spinner presents a well structured lecture which reviews the history,
indications, technique, and provides personal insight into the triple
arthrodesis. Careful review of this PRESENT lecture will give a very clinically
oriented view of the procedure and will also expose you to the more commonly
encountered complications. Seeing these images will help you take steps to avoid
these type of complications when the blade is in your hands. I think you will
benefit from the large number of clinical and radiographic images that Dr.
Spinner includes to emphasize his teaching points and I encourage you to take a
few minutes and view this lecture on line.
