Thanks again to those of you
who participated in our second residency survey on
finding a job. The numbers
of participants (38) were significantly larger
than our last one. As we all
know, more participants mean more relevant results
with a greater utility to the
residency community.
I’m
not surprised that the majority of residents are
finding jobs by word of mouth
(76.3%), with offers from residency attendings
(60.5%) and local physicians
(57.9%) following relatively closely behind. They
work with us closely and know
just how educated and talented we really are. I
heard once a statistic that
about 75% of residents get jobs near their
residency program. These statistics
would back up that idea.
Group
practice (76.3%) and multispecialty practice
(60.5%) are the clear favorites for
the types of practices we plan on participating
in. I’d say the reason for this
is pretty obvious – money! After speaking to
quite a few people and listening
to a number of practice management lectures over
the past few years, I’ve heard
over and over again that these two types of
practices have the largest initial
starting salary. For those of you actively
searching for jobs what have you
heard/experienced in relation to these types of
practices?
Also
not surprisingly, we are planning to go into
practice around the country with
essentially an even distribution. With podiatric
residents spread around the
country and most of us staying local (per our
first question) this even
arrangement is the obvious result.
Finally, with the level of surgical training we
now receive and the presence of
wound care and diabetes in our profession, it
makes perfect sense that we plan
to specialize in surgery (86.8%), wound care
(60.5%), and general practice
(76.3%).
Thanks again to all of you who participated. Without sounding like a
broken record, it’s your participation in Residency Rap, whether responding to
surveys or submitting your own editorials and comments, that make this a useful
resource. Write in with your comments. The residency community wants
to hear your thoughts!
