Hello once again! I hope everyone
had a wonderful Thanksgiving with their fill of turkey, family, and a little
rest (for those of us not on call). It’s back to work, curing patients of their
ailments and improving our clinical acumen in the process. Hopefully you have
interesting surgical cases awaiting your return.
Speaking of surgery, the
results are in on our
Variety in Residency Survey.
Thanks
to those of you who responded. The results are clear. Out of 14 respondents 11
of us (78.6%) felt variety is more important than numbers. Clearly, we strongly
want to see a range of clinical scenarios to ready us for what comes along in
clinical practice. It’s difficult to extrapolate from such a small number, but
I’d feel safe arguing that most residents would agree with the new emphasis on
variety in residency training.
I’m happy to see that most of us (12 respondents or 85.7%) feel they receive
sufficient variety in their own training programs. It’s one thing to want
variety; it’s another to actually receive it. It sounds like our directors and
clinicians are working hard to supply us with that variety.
Additionally, the same numbers of respondents (85.7%) perform enough surgical
numbers to be comfortable. It would have been nice to see a greater response to
this question because residents are always talking about their numbers and
comparing between programs. Most likely, this is because numbers are a simple
and straightforward way to compare experience at programs. Talking about variety
in a “casual” conversation is a bit more cumbersome. I wonder what that percent
might look like if we had closer to 100 or more respondents. Would all residents
be so blissfully happy with his or her programs? Hmm… What do you think? Write
in and let the rest of us know your opinions. Have a week with lots of variety
AND numbers...and PLEASE take some digital photos of those great cases and send
them in to share with us.
